DRESSING FOR YOURSELF & NOBODY ELSE | 09.05.14

When I was fifteen and a junior in high school, I wore a cocktail dress to class. It was by far the best vintage find I had yet: the plunging neckline accentuated my collarbone, the a-line design hugged my body just the right amount, and the silky black velvet was in mint condition. I remember stopping in my tracks while cart-surfing my local goodwill, a sense of awe taking over me. This dress was the embodiment of who I was and everything I ever wanted to be.

Being the impulsive, experimental fifteen-year-old I was, I knew that this dress couldn’t be worn plainly to school, so I paired it with an androgynous, tomboyish look that I definitely carried with me out of my grade-school days. I wore this beautiful, simple cocktail dress with a vintage, bright blue kung-fu t-shirt underneath it and converse sneakers. With sharpie drawings. Of pop-punk lyrics. Now, this sounds like the classic story of a mid-adolescence nightmare of an outfit that is cringed at just a handful of years later. But I don’t look at it that way at all. People may have stared at me in the hallway that cloudy day, and I definitely wouldn’t wear that now, but I still love that outfit because it represented a time in my life when I fell in love with my own individuality.

The point of me discussing this is that fashion is FOR YOU. Fashion isn’t for the approval of your peers, your family, even your sponsors. What you wear is for you and you only. If you want to wear a beaten-up shirt underneath a totally inappropriate dress, you can do it. If you want to wear a cut that people claim is “unflattering” for your body type, you can do it. What you put on your body is your concern and your masterpiece. Any opinions otherwise are complete shit.

There is a quote from The Devil Wears Prada

“…Halston, Lagerfeld, de la Renta… what they did, what they created [fashion] was greater than art because you live your life in it”

There is such a heavy amount of truth to this statement. Fashion is artwork that you live in. Designers can craft pieces all they want, but it is up to bloggers, stylists, artists, and the Consumer to bring life to this artistic medium. It is an individual right to express yourself in the way that you desire, completely unabridged by any opinions other than your own.

On that note, have a great day & dress awesome.
